Did that on my first playthrough when I was in much the same boat as you, and it lasted me until I got to a higher level. Repair them into each other - just be sure you know what ending you want to that quest first or they'll take it back. They give you a free set of black combat armor. Quickest way to get a second set of combat armor if you haven't done the quest already is to go and sign up to guard the Silver Rush at Freeside.
